Taupo Blue Light Seeks Corporate Partners to Fund Supported Driver Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Taupo Blue Light Seeks Corporate Partners to Fund Supported Driver Program.

Taupo, New Zealand – January 30, 2023 - Taupo Blue Light is seeking corporate partners to help fund its Supported Driver Program, a new initiative aimed at providing positive experiences and support to young people in the community as they work towards obtaining their driver's license. The program utilises community mentors to assist young people through the process and provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident, safe drivers.

Despite being a rite of passage for many young people in New Zealand, obtaining a driver's license can be a difficult and challenging process. Financial constraints, lack of access to a vehicle, and a lack of support and guidance can prevent many young people from obtaining their license, leading to them entering the criminal justice system. Tickets for graduated driver's license breaches are the fastest way for a young person to enter the criminal justice system, also known as the "ticket to prison pipeline."

The Supported Driver Program is designed to help young people overcome these barriers and become successful drivers. The program provides a supportive and inclusive environment where young people can learn from experienced drivers, develop their skills, and gain the confidence they need to pass their driving test. The mentors involved in the program are experienced drivers who are passionate about helping young people and work one-on-one with each individual to provide guidance and support.

Taupo Blue Light is seeking $38,000 per year, to cover the costs of operating the program, including salaries for program coordinators, training for mentors, and expenses for materials and resources and the all important vehicle. "We are reaching out to corporate partners to help support this valuable initiative," said Senior Constable Ross Humphrey, Taupo Blue Light Chair. "The program is a valuable resource for young people in the community, and by providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident, safe drivers, the program helps to build a better future for young people in the community and promotes road safety for everyone in the area."

"We are proud to offer this new program to the community and are committed to providing positive experiences and support to young people, helping them to reach their full potential," said Ross. "However, to make this program a success, we need the support of the community and our corporate partners. We hope that local businesses and corporations will see the value in supporting our mission and will partner with us to help make a positive impact on the lives of young people in the Taupo area."
